Ars Nova Workshop is honored to present a very special cross-generational collaboration pairing two of creative music’s most innovative minds, as AACM icon Roscoe Mitchell and drummer-composer Tyshawn Sorey converge at Solar Myth for two performances, April 18-19.

Master saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell is one of the great innovators in creative music of the post-Coltrane, post-Ayler era. For nearly 60 years he has been a restless explorer of new forms, ideas and concepts. A charter member of Chicago’s influential Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, Mitchell founded the Art Ensemble of Chicago (originally the Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble) in 1967 and has since embodied its motto – “Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future” – in ever-evolving ways. He’ll join the Pulitzer Prize-winning drummer and composer Tyshawn Sorey for this thrilling residency. Sorey is celebrated for his extraordinary ability to blend composition and improvisation in his work, while also offering incomparable virtuosity and effortless mastery of highly complex scores. He has performed globally with his own ensembles, as well as alongside industry titans including John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano, Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, King Britt, Claire Chase, and Steve Lehman, among many others.
