Ars Nova Workshop celebrates Don Cherry’s life and work, including Brown Rice, with Tcheser Holmes and 4/5ths Irreversible Entanglements at Solar Myth on Saturday, April 22.
Visionary when it was originally released in 1975, the Don Cherry album variously released under his own name and as Brown Rice was recently hailed by Pitchfork as a “sprawling, free, ecstatic masterwork [that] defined what came to be known as ‘world’ music.” It’s singular music that blends the cosmic and the meditative into wholly unique forms, drawing vibrant inspiration from musical and spiritual traditions that leap across borders. Tcheser Holmes, drummer for the explosive Philly-and-beyond free jazz quintet Irreversible Entanglements, will reinterpret Cherry’s transcendent and boundary-stretching music along with a vibrant cast of collaborators.
