Ars Nova Workshop is excited to present an evening with the Nels Cline Singers.

Guitarist-composer Nels Cline leads this ensemble of rock-influenced musicians, who converge to navigate the spaces where jazz intersects with punk, rock, and experimental music. Cline, who “channels the spirit of Coltrane with a rare intensity, which seems to spring from the same well Jimi Hendrix would have drawn from had he survived to realize his post-rock aspirations” (S.F. Weekly), is a regular member of Wilco, and has performed with artists such as Julius Hemphill, Thurston Moore, Yoko Ono, Charlie Haden, Mike Watt, Tim Berne, and Wadada Leo Smith. The Jazz Times called Cline “The World's Most Dangerous Guitarist.”

San Francisco jazz fixture Amendola, a long-time collaborative partner of Cline's, was a member of T.J. Kirk with Charlie Hunter, Will Bernard and John Schott, and has a long history of touring with performers like Bill Frisell and Mike Patton. Bassist Trevor Dunn, who joined the ensemble in 2011, has a similar background of jazz/rock crossover projects, from Mr. Bungle and the Melvins to collaborations with John Zorn, Endangered Blood and The Proofreaders, an ensemble that plays the free jazz compositions of Ornette Coleman.

The Nels Cline Singers' most recent release on Cryptogramophone, Initiate, “shows a band whose sense of give and take and intuitive interplay is extremely well-developed” (Pitchfork).

Please note: The Nels Cline Singers perform two sets tonight, the first beginning at 9pm.
